Facial Business

Starting a Facial business or adding Facials to your current business can really pay dividends in many ways.

Let me explain more…  Whether you have a beauty salon or it is something you would like to set up from home it can be done.

Starting off

Building your esthetician business from home does allow you a lot more flexibility than diving straight into opening a salon.

You still need to charge the correct pricing as it is not good to charge cheap and devalue the industry.

Starting at home

If you are new, then why not set up at home.  It has to be said, when working from home, there are a few extra benefits:

  • No additional rent to cover.
  • No employees.
  • Your profit margin is much higher.
  • Very little financial risk involved.

Perhaps the most exciting benefit is that you get to create your business however you want to. You can also build a brand that reflects you and what you want to offer your clients.  Yes you can do this in salon too.  But, the reason I talk about home salons is because many think it limits you.

It doesn’t have to…

There can be challenges…

One of the most significant challenges to starting a facial business at home or in salon, is the initial start up costs.  You need enough products and equipment to provide adequate treatments and after care.  However, this can be a low start up and still have quality products.  For example LA Skincare offers a low initial start up package.

Now, if you were previously employed and working in a spa you will have enjoyed using treatments and gadgets owned and supplied by your employer.

Whether you are starting self employed, from an employed role or you are brand new to the industry you will need to acquire all of the tools necessary to run it.

Home salon or not

Whether you choose the home salon route or to rent premises, any business requires extra responsibilities that you may not have considered.  Such as:

  • Budgeting
  • Marketing
  • Finances
  • Business operations
  • Administration

What should you consider?

  • Start up costs
  • Licenses/Qualifications
  • Insurance
  • Space
  • Customer base

Start up costs

Firstly, you need to consider the cost of equipment you need in order to practice facials.

At the very least, you are going to need to attend a facial course.

From there you will need a facial chair or massage table, a stool for yourself, shelving, sterilizing equipment, and a magnifying lamp. You’ll need supplies, like gloves, applicators, mixing dishes, jars, measuring cups, facial brushes, facial masks and eye masks to do your work.

Identify the products you want to use and calculate how much you’ll initially need when you open your spa. From there, run the numbers on how much you’re likely to use each month. This will help you figure out what it’s going to cost to replace these products as you operate your business.

As mentioned, you will need to undergo a course on facial therapy.

You can train with LA Training Academy and to train and certify yourself to practice facials with us is only a 1 day course!!

All practical tuition, training materials- towels, blankets, creams/oils.  Massage tables/chairs are all provided on the day as well as a fully comprehensive manual.  The theory is all done online in your own time, to make the most of the day we have together!

Achieving a Beauty Therapy diploma couldn’t be easier with our Accredited Online courses.  You can learn at your own pace, in your own time and start your own business!

The main thing with any course, not just in beauty.  It is important to ensure that the course you are taking is accredited with an appropriate governing body.  This ensures you are able to get insurance for your course and this way you can start earning money by performing treatments on clients.

Be careful as there are many (very cheap) online courses that do not provide adequate accreditation for you to gain insurance.

All our courses are accredited by ABT for insurance and CPD accredited signifying the excellence of our training standards and professionalism.

Salons will have a treatment room so that is easy.

However, if you decide to work from home, clients coming for facial appointments will still expect a high standard of comfort and relaxation.

You cannot do facials in your living room where family members may accidentally walk past. You must have a room that can be turned into a peaceful place where your clients can wind down and properly enjoy the service.

Within this room, you need to make sure you have the electrical sockets necessary to power the equipment, ventilation, heating, or cooling to create a comfortable environment. Not too hot, not too cold, quiet, calm and with an ambiance that provides a spa like feel.

Ask yourself…

  • Can you designate an entrance for your treatment room that’s distinct from your home entrance?
  • Is there a separate bathroom your clients can use?
  • Do you have a separate room you can use for the facials?
  • Do you have a waiting area for clients to relax in before the treatment begins?

Marketing is a critical part of running any business. And this can be particularly tricky when your business is operating from your home and you won’t have the foot traffic to be noticed by potential clients.

So, go get them!

Get out there and attract your clients through your marketing. Your business is an extension of you, you are your brand and promoting that can feel awkward at first. You’ll get the hang of it as your confidence in your treatments grow.

Is this for you??

If you’ve considered everything I have laid out for you, and you’re still excited about the prospect of going into business, then starting an at-home facial studio could be the right move for you!!

Getting started at home is a relatively low-risk, high-reward way to build your business, build your client base and establish your brand.
